Racing for the Cure or Walking Towards Prevention:
Idiosyncrasies in the American Cancer Cure Movement
By: Aurore Adamkiewicz, ND

So fall is here and I have finally stopped receiving all of those emails and invitations to "stop" cancer by pledging money, time, and exercise. Well, it's a nice gesture for sure, burning all those calories, getting in shape-and knowing each step goes towards "helping" to find a cure for cancer...or even just sitting back and writing a check and imagining I have done my part to change the world. Maybe this is how things work on TV or in fantasy land but the truth needs to be told.

I received several emails from someone asking me to sponsor them earlier this year for race for the cure-I kindly deleted them and ignored them...finally after the fourth email, I decided to give her an explanation and here is what I said: "While I feel proud of you to train and create such a powerful personal goal, I cannot pledge my support towards an organization who's ultimate goal is to NOT find a cure as to obtain the most possible cash flow, create more cancer through radiation and chemotherapy, and who deliberately misleads and hides the truth."

Let's look at some of the obvious ground based inconsistencies surrounding Pink Ribbons and Racing for a Cure: First of all, I drove past a race last year and just shook my head as I saw a crowd of people racing for the cure talking on their brain cancer causing cell phones. Then I was invited several months ago to a "Eat a Hot Dog to Cure Cancer" event, apparently, someone wanted to raise money to fight cancer by selling hot dogs. Sadly, the invitation had a picture of a completely bald young boy with cancer-eating a cancer causing hot dog. Pink ribbons, these really get me going, I was at the mall and some women were passing out Pink Ribbons for a donation, these breast cancer activists all had under wire bras on, one woman had breast implants (obvious hard round capsular contraction) and I could almost bet money that all of them were wearing aluminum laden lymph clogging anti-perspiring (no spots under their arms : ) And, don't even get me going about the new vaccines that stop cancer with cancer causing poisons in them like formaldehyde. It is this oxy-moronic scene which inspired me to write this article and inspires me to keep reaching out with natural and life giving alternatives.

I can only think that this type of "pseudo" activism serves the purpose of making people "feel good" and perhaps even stave off their guilt but it also is a big part of the cancer problem. People would do far better making healthier choices for themselves and their children (immediate surroundings) rather than taking on a grand scale environmental problem that is out of their control in a completely useless and meaningless way. Now don't get me wrong, these people are not bad and of course they mean well- but we are talking about a VERY serious deadly disease, cancer-the greatest epidemic of our day. Not one family has been untouched by cancer, yet we continue as a society to ask for easy, entertaining ways to catch a killer. Let me give an example: A dangerous killer is loose in your neighborhood- you know he is next door and is breaking in, who do you call Brittany Spears or the Police? Well, sad but true, people like the show-the entertainment- they want the world of illusion to cure their illness- meanwhile the killer moves from next door to their house... and that is just he way it works.

Am I Racing for the Cure? NO! I am walking towards prevention, while I do not propose to have all the answers, I did work in an oncology clinic and I do have some experience with this devastating disease. Here are some of my prevention tactics (just a few...)

  • Fresh, Organic fruits and veggies- everyday
  • Raw Milks and cheeses (we go to the farm to get it)
  • Detox every spring
  • No poisonous household chemicals
  • No poisonous personal care items (make-up, lotions, tampons, etc)
  • Exercise everyday (includes jogging with no bra for lymph stimulation)
  • NO VACCINES
  • Limited cell phone use-none for my children, and always on speaker pointed away
  • NO Wireless- (Wi-Fi)
  • No TVs or computer in the bedroom, only one each in the house and far away.
  • No electrical cords en masse in the wall behind the bed
  • No routine hair drying (once a week or less)
  • Natural clothing material-preferably organic- only -wool, cotton, silk, ramie, modal...
  • 20 minutes of sunlight every day
  • NO tap water-water is purified-for the whole house-
  • NO pesticides on lawn, lawn is not as perfect as a Hollywood movie star-but healthy!
  • NO Fluorescent lighting or Full spectrum lighting in my home
  • Non radioactive smoke detectors (yes, did you know your smoke detector is radioactive?)
  • No drugs-including hormones, in the form of birth control, etc.

I hope this helps give you some ideas to think about and helps some one to slow down to stop racing for the cure and walk faithfully and truthfully in prevention.
