Perils of Homeopathy in America: Part II
I have had a huge response in my emails about my homeopathy blog- which is located a few pages back on my website ...
Many people want to know why I am very careful about homeopathy as an ND...so here is a little backdrop about the current situation with homeopathy in the States.
Most people who come to see me, are already into
homeopathy and treat it without reservation.
Like one Mother who came to see me carried an array of homeopathics and was passing them out like candy to herself and her kids-frantically-
It appears to be based on a distrust of the human bodies natural propensity to heal, a distrust in natural remedies, a misunderstanding of homeopathics..coupled with an allopathic ideology that has long been bred into our American minds with the drug model-There is a strong emphasis on supersizing and quanity...
I dedicate a whole chapter to this in my book- my book is essentially for people who already are "Holistic" or have been living in the natural healing realm, but are still experiencing chronic problems-that's why I called it "Beyond Natural Cures".
A few things about homeopathy that people do not understand...
  • It is a very deep and profound acting substance-in small quanitites makes deep cellular changes, and can take months to fully come into fruition. I like to compare this to Steiner and how he talked about the early intellectualization and protein in children causes hardening and metabolic insufficiencies later in life. In this respect-many people are grossly misunderstanding the power of homeopathy and what it does to the system.
  • Many homeopathic substances interact, and anecdote eachother out-meaning you have people taking apis one day, nat mur the next day, twice in one day taking sulfur and graphites-without regard to the system and how the substances interact with eachother.
Most of the people I see- will not stop taking coffee or mint, and have at times lied to me, saying they can or have given up coffee and mint and haven't. Then, when their homeopathics don't work, they end up blaming me or the remedies because they have not followed the protocol-so I tell everyone up front- if you want to do this-this is how, and if you want to take this seriously then we can pursue homeopathy-if not then there are other things to work with. Not all remedies anecdote with coffee and mint, but everyone reacts differently.
  • Taking too much, again, this falls under the same category of taking too many different kinds, Now, this is different when working with lower doses and an acute situation like a sore throat, but it has been my expereience that most people don't give the remedies adequate time to work and overdose with them-if you overdose with homeopathics-they can actually make you more sick and intensify your symptoms-in whatever potency amounts. So, you actually go over the point of healing-to the point to exacerbation.
  • The emotional/psychological aspects are completely downplayed in most homeopathic literature, especially in terms of higer potencies. Constitutionally-they say "will help with depression or someone who is always frightened or scared"...however-when the reason and feelings rise to the surface because of homeopathy-say for instance jealousy and rage held in the pelvis, in the case of lachesis- One needs to be working with a homeopath that understands the psychological aspects and can help them work it out and pull it through, I would say psychiatrist-but many of you know how I feel about the Freudian and Jungian model-and in this way, I feel like this aspect of homeopathy is a great big hole that is not being adequately addressed or dealt with and can be considered dangerous (I also explain the same reasoning with craniosacral therapy in my book)- Simply put, most homeopaths and psychologists-don't know what to do with human emotion-the answer usually is to ignore it or drug it away...leaving the patient more confused and depressed then before.
  • I have read an article about how homeopathy actually causes imbalances and cancer- sounds bizarre? Not too me, because it is a deep acting substance and makes deep changes-and if you look at it in terms of Steiners model- we need to treat everything that comes into our body with respect and reverance. Nothing is completely "harmless"- that downplays the truth of it's effectiveness as far as I am concerned. But again, this harmful factor only applies to people who misuse homeopathy-and fall under the "Frantic addictive" substance category. If anyone is interested in this article-I am in the process of scanning it and putting it on my site.
So, I could go on...but this is a gist of the American homeopathic realm. If you want to know how I use it-here is the protocol I follow:
I do not use it on every person, I only use one or two remedies- per month, I give each remedy at least three months to peak, I psychologically work with people with drawing, art, sound therapy, color therapy, flower essence and emotion releasing under the Reichian model-referring them out to an Orgonomist if I deem it necessary, I use homeopathy most often with people who are undergoing treatments that release repressed emotions-for instance, Rolfing, the emotion stored in the tight muscles is released like an Orgonomy treatment, yet without the contact with a licensed professional (this also applies to CST). I will give my patients homeopathics to use before and during so that they can get the most out of their Rolfing (or CST) session...often what happens is the muscle is released and healing begins but then the action is thwarted by emotion and psychological habits...in the case of a nervous person who chronically raises their shoulders...the muscle is released but the psychological aspects are also a powerful factor as to whether or not these people will be able to move forward in healing and psychologically release.
I would, personally, like to see a big -cross the society board-change in the area of homeopathy and psychiatry-but unfortunately-many forces are at play here- you have misinformation, you have stubborn people unwilling to look at things and change, you have people who are not ready to look at their illness or disease, you have drug companies, and now herb and vitamin companies looking to chronically placate symptoms and disorders by making money off of symptoms rather than healing..
I like to think, for myself, each person I work with should be ready and knowledgable enough within 3-6 months to self heal after working with me-and shouldn't need to keep coming back- obviously, it still happens, but for me my goal is to get people educated and more critically minded concerning their healthcare.
I have tried to bring this issue to the forefront- with magazines and such-but most circles are hesitant to move forward and cling to the old model, ignoring the more complex issues-This mindset seems to be a deciding factor in chronic illness and the bodies ability to heal....
